I posted a thread in general discussion to the 1964 Ida B interview that went nowhere. I found it revealing that in that interview, Al makes note of Mike writing lyrics and Brian makes no mention of any collaborator even though he is explaining his song writing process. Though I don't think Brian meant anything malicious by not crediting Mike or Roger or Gary....the mere fact that Al was able to point it out kind of shows that Mike has raised a very valid point over the years. If you were part of the writing process and had received little to no acknowledgement pretty much all along, you might have a chip on your shoulder too. I also think some of the credits Mike has received as the result of lawsuits and such are pretty thin, but again, stepping back and looking at the pattern throughout the Beach Boys career, the reason things came to that could have and should have been avoided in the first place.
The remark from Dennis about Brian being everything and the rest of the guys being nothing I have also come to believe was indeed sarcasm. Doesn't mean Brian wasn't king though, that's not debatable.
That Ida B interview is very interesting I agree. Brian's interview says nothing of Mike's side of the songwriting..
I do find that a bit odd.
I'm suspecting, but will stand corrected on this, that Murry influenced Brian as the control artist of the group
and Mike was a 'contributor', but one not as important as Brian. I love Brian to death, but he pretty well
claims complete authority on these tunes, which we know now, Mike had a huge part of.
It's a bit disturbing considering he didn't mention Mike as a lyricist even back in 64.
I'm only seeing what I'm seeing with the clip.... but even then Mike got the 'shaft' as early as this.
